I used to live in Ventura California, within sight of Point Mugu, the northern boarder of Malibu. Now that I’ve become an expatriate of the Golden State, I look back on Malibu with some nostalgia. Everybody who lives near or in Malibu knows that Malibu burns up on a regular basis; Pacific Coast Highway slides into the ocean regularly; Big waves batter the beach homes of the rich and famous regularly; floods take out gullies and canyons regularly; and there is enough high grade marijuana being harvested in those hills every week to keep the state of New Hampshire stoned for five years. Most of that weed is consumed locally. How else could Bob Dylan stay incoherent for the last forty years?
As a former Californian I offer a few Ideas on why the fire started: First-Arson; Arson is always the leading suspect for fires in Malibu-Arsonists love to burn Malibu and get their handiwork lots of free airtime. Second- Marijuana induced stupor, or plane old whiskey induced stupor leading to accidental fire. In California the difference between a determination of accidental fire and arson with manslaughter charges depends on the quality of your attorney. Third-Bubbas meth lab blew up; This used to only occur in the inland empire, but has been migrating to the coast in recent years. Meth production is big money, and why should the rich of Malibu leave it’s production to the poor? Fourth and least likely-the fire occurred naturally.
I predict that in the next thirty or forty years California will try to succeed from the Union of the United States of America. When news days are slow at that time the news reporters will have to fill the airwaves with something besides Malibu fires. Does anybody care when Tijuana is on fire?
